Sofa beds: Why you need one on the Costa del Sol

by Mad About Furniture |9 November 2022 | Blog

The mighty sofa bed is the king of sleepovers – a dual functioning dream! But their reputation has certainly taken a hammering over the years. It’s fair to say that at some point in our lives, we’ve all had an awful experience on a sofa bed. Creaking springs, bad backs and less than desirable mattresses, the sofa bed isn’t typically known for its comfortable properties. But we’re here to bring the humble sofa bed back into the limelight. Gone are the days of sleepless sleepovers – it’s time to say hello to the new generation of sofa bed!

They’ve come a long way since their original introduction to the market in the late 1950s. Nowadays, the sofa bed market has changed completely. With space having become a premium in many of our homes both here in Spain and in the UK, there’s now a huge focus on making the most of the space we have available.

Sofa beds on the Costa del Sol

Here on the beautiful Costa del Sol, we know all too well what it’s like to have to cater to lots of people. With lots of friends and family visiting all year round, it’s essential to make as much use of our space as possible. With a sofa bed, you won’t have to deal with storing fold up beds or air mattresses. Instead, you’ll have a sofa that fits in with your lifestyle, without compromising on the decor and style of your home.

Sofa beds are also great for holiday homes and rentals, making it much easier to provide additional space. Traditional fold up beds can be cumbersome and difficult to store, but sofa beds can complement your interiors and blend in effortlessly. With so many styles available, you can find the perfect one for your holiday home.

Whether you’re catering to friends and family on a yearly basis, or if you want a ‘just in case’ bed, it’s without a doubt that sofa beds are hugely popular here on the Costa del Sol. But when it comes to choosing the right one for your home, where do we start?

Here at Mad About Furniture, we’ve put together a handy guide, complete with our own recommendations, to buying a sofa bed for your home on the Costa del Sol!

What to look for in a sofa bed

Much like choosing a sofa, you’ll need to consider how you’re going to be using your sofa bed. Will it be your primary sofa? Will children and pets be using it? Upholstered sofa beds need to be well constructed and hard wearing enough to tackle daily use. It’s worth considering the fabric too, as something that looks great might be difficult to keep clean.

The comfort-levels of sofa beds vary quite significantly too. Whilst some are designed to offer bed-like comfort, others are only fine for the occasional overnight stay. Consider what you and your guests need for a good night’s kip!

Types of sofa bed

Here there are just 2 simple choices – pull-out or fold-out. There are a few pros and cons for each, so it’s down to you to decide which one suits you and your home. Pull-out sofa beds are the most common type, offering the closest comfort levels to that of a standard bed. However, fold-out sofa beds offer more flexibility when it comes to style, paving the way for more contemporary designs. It’s worth having a think about the needs of both you and your guests and what matters most in your home or holiday rental before you commit to a certain design.

Sofa bed sizes

It’s not one size fits all when it comes to the sofa bed. There’s a wide variety of options out there, from single armchair beds (yes really!), all the way up to corner sofas. Start with the obvious – checking the size of the sofa bed to ensure it fits the room when fully open. You’ll need to make a note of the measurement from the back of the sofa, all the way to the end of the sleeping area, to ensure it’ll fit the space you have in mind.

When it comes to mattress sizes, some sofa beds can go up to a full King size, perfect for hosting friends and family for more than one night. The average size of a sofa bed tends to be a double. It’s worth noting that a large sofa may not necessarily equate to a large sleeping space. What might seem like a reasonable sleeping space for you, may not be for your guests, and they could end up having a miserable night’s sleep. We highly recommend testing out some sofa beds to see for yourself – we have a selection at our showroom in Estepona!

Sofa bed styles

As we mentioned earlier – the sofa bed has come a long way over the past few years. There’s now a wide variety of contemporary and traditional styles to suit any home. The more contemporary and chic options might look great and offer guests comfort but aren’t ideal for use as an everyday sofa. It’s all about finding the right balance for you and your needs.
